Close Race in BC as Election Day Arrives

The BC NDP lead narrowly despite David Eby being better known and liked than his Conservative opponent

Oct 18, 2024

A new spark*insights online poll of 400 British Columbians conducted in partnership with iPolitics finds a tight race in the province as election day arrives.

Among the key findings:

  • 42% say they will vote for David Eby's NDP compared to 40% who support the BC Conservatives and 12% who support the BC Green Party.
  • John Rustad's Conservative Party has been successful at consolidating support among right-of-centre voters, with 80% support among federal Conservative voters.
  • However, the Conservatives have little support among other federal voter groups and the NDP are enjoying the support of 75% of federal Liberal voters, a group that is often a deciding factor in BC provincial elections.

Furthermore, our polling on the party leaders found low awareness of John Rustad and a clear favourability advantage for David Eby over his Conservative opponent. For full details and analysis of our leadership polling, read the full article on this survey at iPolitics.ca

OUR TAKE

Alex Kohut, Senior Director of spark*insights: "We're going to see a much closer election on Saturday than the NDP expected when they dropped the writ. The Conservatives have consolidated support among right-of-centre voters in BC, but they haven't been able to reach out beyond federal Conservative voters or establish Rustad as a popular leader and that has slowed their growth. The NDP should be considered the favourite to hold on to their majority government, but we might be in for a long night before a result is certain."
