A Creator’s Guide to Instagram's New "Your Algorithm" Update

In a recent Instagram post, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced an upcoming feature called “Your Algorithm,” which introduces a significant evolution in how users interact with the platform. The feature would allow users to actively customize and fine-tune their feeds in real time. As Mosseri explained, “Over time, we want your algorithm to feel like something you talk to rather than something that happens to you.”

Early prototypes of “Your Algorithm” include a pull-down menu in the main feed, a swipe-up prompt on individual Reels, and controls that let users indicate whether they want to see more or fewer posts like a particular Reel.

By handing more control to users, Instagram is effectively giving audiences a greater say in what appears in their feeds. This raises an important question: what will customizable algorithms mean for content creators, brands, and companies that rely on Instagram for reach, engagement, and advertising?

Niche or Nothing

Under the new system, users can see exactly which topics Instagram has tagged an account or video with, and they can surgically remove any categories they don't want. However, this new feature may allow smaller creators to reach more defined niche audiences that they otherwise might not be able to access as easily. As broad, generic content becomes less competitive, users can filter toward what they genuinely enjoy, resulting in more loyal audiences.

The New Algorithmic Currency

Watch time, completion rates, and private DM shares are strong ranking signals; with this new update, explicit user intent becomes the newest form of algorithmic currency. A creator video that feels slightly annoying or irrelevant will no longer just be scrolled past; it will actively prompt users to hit the “less like this” button or remove that content category altogether. This will reward depth over volume; fewer, better posts beat high-frequency mediocre ones.

Stop Chasing Trends, Start Building Ecosystems

Because users are actively curating their feeds, the “Explore” page and “Reels” tab will become highly fragmented. Creators can no longer count on generalized viral trends to carry their reach across the platform. Instead, media will be funneled directly into specific interest groups. For businesses, this will mean building a recognizable content ecosystem instead of constantly chasing trends.

The Human Element

Instagram will now have more insight into what users intentionally want to learn and engage with, meaning educational creators and brands could significantly benefit from this update. The feature is also designed to address what Mosseri has described as a "platform-level problem": synthetic content fatigue, driven in part by the growing volume of posts that feels overly reliant on generative AI. As a result, materials that feel authentic, original, and human are likely to stand out more than highly polished, AI-generated posts.

It’s one thing to understand what Instagram is doing, but it’s another to actually apply it to your social media strategy. Here’s how this translates into practical changes for creators and brands:

Reinforce Topic Clarity

  • Focus on one or two closely related themes.

  • Optimize your bio, captions, and keywords to make your page discoverable.

Intentional Actions over Vanity Metrics

  • Focus on content that drives saves and DMs.

  • Include clear calls-to-action (CTAs) that encourage real interaction.

  • Replying to DMs and comments also helps build trust and keeps audiences active.

  • Use Instagram Insights to see which posts are performing best and what audiences respond to.

Implement Trial Reels for Risk-Free Testing

  • Use Instagram’s “Trial Reels” or scheduling features to test new formats, hooks, or topics with non-followers first.

  • Use paid creator partnerships to gain more reach.

AI is a tool, not a voice

  • AI should be treated as a supporting tool for editing, brainstorming, and subtitles while keeping the ideas, expertise, and voice human. Originality and authenticity will continue to perform better.

This update continues a trend we've been seeing over the last few years: Instagram is moving away from rewarding content that tries to reach the largest possible audience and toward materials that resonate with specific groups. As recommendation systems become more personalized and users gain more control over what they see, success will come less from trying to "game the algorithm" and more from creating content that people genuinely want to engage with.

For creators and companies, that means asking a simple question before hitting publish: Who is this for, and why would someone choose to watch, save, or share it? Brands that can answer that consistently will be in a much stronger position as Instagram continues to evolve.

While “Your Algorithm” won't give users complete control over their feeds, it does represent a shift toward a more personalized experience. For creators, that means knowing your niche, staying consistent, and letting your data guide you.
